European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as 'Euro-English'.

In the first year, 's' will replace the soft 'c'. Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard 'c' will be dropped in favour of 'k'. This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter. There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome 'ph' will be replaced with 'f'. This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.

Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling.

Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent 'e' in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away.

By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing 'th' with 'z' and 'w' with 'v'.

During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary 'o' kan be dropd from vords kontaining 'ou' and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensibl riten styl.

Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru.

Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst plas.

Hi everyone,

Following is a link to a very interesting video 'The Elegant Universe'. It is recommended viewing for the LiFE Academy's Quantum Physics module.

Very interesting show recently on ABC Radio National's "All in the Mind" programme.

"The dogma used to be that the adult brain was a rigid, unchangeable organ, but that pessimistic perspective is now being radically revised. Psychiatrist Dr Norman Doidge journeyed into the labs and lives of the 'neuroplasticians' -- once scientific mavericks, they're challenging the old neurological nihilism. Professor Jeffrey Schwartz is one. They both join Natasha Mitchell in discussion to reveal how the human brain has underestimated itself! Next week, plasticity on the couch..."

Last year my daughter was turning seven. I asked her whether she wanted a party or if she would like to use the money to help a family in another country that was very poor. I explained that we could either buy a goat or a vegetable garden to help make their lives better. Because she is so young I didn't want her to feel she had to do it so I told her that she could always do this another year if she wanted to have a party instead. She told me she would think about it.

About an hour later she came back and told me that she wanted to do both. I took a deep breath ready to launch into why I couldn't afford to do both the party and the charity when she carried on to explain that we needed to buy both a goat and a vegetable garden so the family could have food and something to drink!!!

She was delighted when her gift cards arrived showing the picture of the goat and the garden that she had bought. It was a really inspiring experience not only for my daughter and her very proud parents, but also for her classmates and teachers.

We used "The World's Most Useful Gift Catalogue" from TEAR Australia. www.usefulgifts.org

TEAR Australia pioneered the idea of useful gifts for people who need them most. The concept is simple.

If you purchase a goat, for example, TEAR will allocate your $50 tax-deductible donation to one of their local partner organisations in Afghanistan (or another of the countries listed).

Like many people I have been involved with lots of charities over the years. One of my main concerns has always been the fact that I'm never quite sure exactly how much of the money we donate ends up with the people who need it.

Kiva is a non-profit company that allows you to lend as little as $25 to a specific low-income entrepreneur in the developing world.

You choose who to lend to - whether a baker in Afghanistan, a goat herder in Uganda, a farmer in Peru, a restaurateur in Cambodia, or a tailor in Iraq - and as they repay their loan, you get your money back.  It’s a powerful and sustainable way to empower someone right now to lift themselves out of poverty.

You can check out their website at www.kiva.org
